Gala Coral, the big name behind Gala Bingo are to close at least six of their 156 land based bingo clubs amid reports that 200 staff are to lose their jobs. Consultations are taking place now with staff members in what will be the biggest bingo hall closure of 2009.
Gala Coral already laid off 200 staff in November last year and while the online bingo game is most definitely booming it seems that land based bingo clubs are struggling more and more.
Gala Coral also own the Coral bookmaking chain and between the two employ around 19,000 people, making them a big employer within the UK but in times of financial uncertainty and the problems that land based bingo halls are facing it seems that this may just be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to land based bingo.
Since the introduction of the smoking ban and gaming machine restrictions land based bingo halls have been suffering and now with the recession it seems that many of them are struggling to keep their heads above water.
For many of us there is no beating the online bingo hall and one good thing is that even if the Gala Bingo hall near you closes you can still play bingo at Gala, online by clicking the banner above.
